You are right all the FTA stb's are technically capiable of receiving a 7 day DVB compliant EPG. The problem is that because of Sky's use of a non DVB compliant EPG the 'freesat' EPG fell into the trap of trying to be compatible with the same Sky EPG data streams.
Maplin simply lists the FTA stb's as capiable of receiving a 7 day EPG. They do not claim that it receives the 'freesat' or Sky EPG and are technically correct.
*#6You are right, they do only say that provides a 7 day EPG on channels that provide this, I think if they are selling it in the UK and Ireland they should really put a note with it stating that none of the channels you are likely to want to watch do support this. I guess for just over £100 I have a HD STB and HDR, there isn't anything else that I saw that could do that at anything like that price.
*#7glyder4 - What external HDD are you using? Does it skip/jump or do you find the playback on SD/HD to be smooth? I have a IDE (not sata) USB laptop drive in a caddy and I wondered if that would work or would it be too slow? Also can you get ITV HD on it at all?
I've been looking for a HD PVR for non-28E (and 28E of course!) sats but most cost far more than this and apart from a 7 day EPG on the Passion+ the others don't have a 7 day EPG either. Also it hardly seems worth paying out £300 for a integrated HD HDD PVR (Topfield TF7710) when it still doesn't have a 7 day EPG even with the twin tuners. The Foxsat PVR is no good as it can't cope with recording from other non 28E sats very well.
*#8It is a Fujitsu Siemens 250GB from CPC (CS15923). I chose it because it is powered from the USB. I have had no glitches and judging by the rate of the LED flashing it is working at about 50% when recording or playing HD. Thinking about this it must be less than that as it copes with buffering live HD when it must be both reading and writing two different streams. It is quite too.

*#10glyder4 - Thanks for the feedback. I currently have a Comag SL65 and I'm very happy with it. Being as I have a ROI Sky sub I can't record BBC3/4 or any ITVs etc as they don't appear in the ROI Sky EPG. Even if I got a Sky HD box I still wouldn't so this is my main reason for getting another cheap PVR instead.

*#12Just had a major failure of all my FTA (non Freesat) recievers so have bought a Comag SL100HD as an interim purchase and it seems pretty good but I can't get ITV HD and have yet to work out the channel editor as my German is very rusty.
One problem though, I can't record HD (except for Arte HD) as it gives a message that 'the USB is too slow for this channel'. Tried a memory stick, tried a HDD, yet to try other HDDs.

My Fortec Star Passion Plus does (ish) it supports it and populates it most of the time, but you cant set recordings from it, they have to be done manually; although it should do it; it's not very reliable (recordings wise), whereas recordings are totally reliable when done manually.
Picture and siound quality are superb and ioverall I'm happy with it for the price, but it is a compromise, it doesn't have the 'enthusiast' features and appeal of my old Manhatten ST550, and it's not as easy to use as my Humax Freesat HD box, it's somewhere in between.
It is, however, a cheap way to record ITV HD, and with the 'weekly' option in the timer it does this quite splendidly when a series record is required.
